After
School Program Gives Students
Opportunity to Work It Out!
In Spring 2005, Work It Out! successfully
launched a beta test in New York City as a collaboration
between The After-School Corporation (TASC), Bally Total
Fitness, and Marlin Entertainment. Available to 25 students
at 10 New York City high schools, the program ran for 8
weeks.
Designed by Marlin Entertainment, Work It
Out! channels the after-school energy of middle and high
school students into a free, groundbreaking, nationally
branded fitness program at America’s leading health
clubs. The key to this program is the match between the
student’s “at risk” hours and the health
club industry's “off-peak” hours of 2:30-5:00PM.
Work IT Out! provides a positive environment
“outside” of the school utilizing a contemporary,
irreverent MTV marketing approach. The program promotes
healthy lifestyles while simultaneously improving self esteem
and creating a positive peer group influence.
Work It Out! promotes exercise as the primary
way to combat youth obesity while laying the foundation
for a lifetime of healthy living. It improves students’
self-esteem and develops a positive peer group influence.
Additionally it provides a healthy alternative to other,
potentially unhealthy after-school activities.
The goals are simple:
In addition to two free workouts a week, the students participate
in one in-school period of Work It Out! Curriculum. Curriculum
topics range from workout goals to healthy eating habits.
After success with the pilot program, plans
have begun for the Spring 2006 renewal in New York. Future
plans are to expand the program nationally.
